Deirdre Nansen McCloskey is a Professor Emeritus of Economics, History, English, and Communication at the University of Illinois. According to the thinker herself, Deirdre is a literary, quantitative, postmodern, free-market, progressive Episcopalian, Midwestern-born woman who was once a man. Author of several books, McCloskey will bring to the main stage her vision on how to overcome humanity's great challenges like poverty and tyranny. The professor will share how a return to liberal and Enlightenment values of freedom and prosperity can support overcoming these crises. In discussion, we will hear her argument about how liberalism leads to equality, but equality does not necessarily lead to liberalism. Liberalism is an optimistic philosophy that relies on the power of rhetoric rather than coercion, ethics, free speech, and facts to thrive
